Re: Jack Hinson: One-Man War Book Signing

John,

I found at least three errors in this book myself.

The author denies that Dover, TN was ever burned in the war. In actuality it was burned in August, 1862 by the 71st Ohio Infantry during the first Battle of Dover when Tom Woodward's cavalry attacked them there after retaking Clarksville. Their small fort was the city cemetery and they burned the buildings to clear a field of fire to the south including the county courthouse. I have definite proof of this from period accounts including the chaplain of the 71st Ohio. My wife's ancestors were in that regiment and were with the Dover companies at the time.

He has the rank for Reuben Ross as Brigadier General. He was never confirmed to that rank by the CS Senate. Bruce Allardice, author of "More Confederate Generals in Gray" states the same thing. He suspects, as do I, that the rank was confused with that of Texas Gen. Lawrence Sullivan Ross (it indeed shows up in an old Confederate Veteran). Although he did serve for a time in the Adjutant General's office that does not carry a brigadier's rank. He was a colonel on Lyon's Raid in late 1864 when he was killed.

He has Forrest's route of escape from Ft. Donelson as being the modern road south out of Dover. This is incorrect as that road did not exist at that time. The then Charlotte Road connected with Church Street and went over the ridge before dropping into Lick Creek and crossing at a ford. This is about 200 yards west of the modern road.

I have no idea as to the veracity of the rest of the book as I do not know enough about Hinson to comment but if I found these on a perusal then there may well be more.

Greg Miller, by the way, is a consumate researcher.
