The one card for an H. J. Hicks in the 8th notes that his cards are filed with A. J. Hicks which are actually filed under the name Andrew J. Hicks.

The 4th (Murray's) Cavalry Regiment, became Company B, 8th (Baxter Smith's) Cavalry Regiment which was raised with men from Sullivan county

A. J. Hicks enlisted as a 2nd Corporal in Captain D. McClellan's Company, 5th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry** on August 14, 1861 by D. M. Key at Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of 12 months, last recorded present on the January/February 1862 muster, no further records

**This company subsequently became Company F, 5th (McClellan's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry.

This battalion was formed August 29, 1861, with six companies of twelve months men which had been organized for the Provisional Army of Tennessee and afterward transferred to the Confederate States service. The battalion was re-organized May 24,1862, and, with the exception of Companies B and F, was then consolidated with the 4th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry to form the 2nd (Asby's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. Companies A, C, D and E becoming Companies A, B, C and K, respectively, of that regiment. Companies B and F formed the nucleus of Spiller's Battalion Tennessee Cavalry and subsequently became Companies I and C, respectively of the 4th (Murray's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.

Andrew J.[A. J.] Hicks enlisted August 14, 1862 at Knoxville, Tennessee by D. M. Key for a period of 12 months, first recorded present as 3rd Sergeant, Company B, 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment** January 28, 1863, value of Brown Mare $800, captured April 2, 1863 at Woodbury, Tennessee, forwarded from Murfreesboro to Nashville Penitentiary and paroled April 3, 1863, received at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky April 10, 1863 and discharged April 14 to City Point, Virginia via Fort McHenry, Maryland, for exchange, no further records

**This regiment was organized in January, 1863 with ten companies A to K. Companies B, C, H and Ihad formerly served as Companies C, H, I and F, respectively, of the 4th (Murray's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry; Companies D, E, F and G formerly served in a temporary field organizations known as Davis' Battalion Tennessee Cavalry, and Companies A and K were formerly independent companies; Company L was added August 1, 1864.

The regiment was mustered in the field as the 4th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry but was officially designated by the A & I G. O. as the 8th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry
