Reply to Mr. George Martin: Of the names on your Sullivan County list, the names William C. Hicks (great grand uncle) and H.J. Hicks (great grand uncle) are my only known relatives. My great grandfather, Jacob, their other brother, is not on the list. He died in 1867, his widow, Mary Jane Davis Hicks, moved back to her native Carter County, where she filed for and was granted a Widows Pension (# 1094). The J.H. Hicks on the list is Jacob H. Hicks and is often confused with my great grandfather by genealogical researchers. Notes on Jacob H. Hicks/Jacob Hicks can be found at www.tngenweb.org/sullivan. This is the same J.H. Hicks who signed the sworn, notarized affidavit (listed on same web site under Pensions), who swore he was with H.J. (Henry Jack) at Greenesboro at the surrender of his command. It is this sworn testimony, along with the signature of co-affiant, Jacob's brother William C., that I am asking the V.A. use to grant a memorial headstone for Henry Jack. However, the V.A. insists on primary documents...muster rolls or discharge papers. I feel the V.A.'s requirements are overly rigid due to the lack of accurate records for many Confederate soldiers.
