General Johnston was hit while leading an attack from the Sarah Bell cotton field up towards the Peach Orchard which was held by Hurlbut's division. This was the 2 pm attack led by Johnston, General Breckinridge and Governor Harris and proved to be a decisive attack. There were five confederate brigades involved, Chalmers' and Jackson's brigades on the east side of the Hamburg-Savannah Road, next Bowen's brigadejust east of the road, Statham's brigade west of the road with one regiment on the east side of the road. Finally, Stephens' brigade now commanded by Colonel Deas was in the middle of the Sarah Bell cotton field and stretched to the tree line on the west side of the field. This attack did not directly oppose the position held by General Prentiss which was to the west above the Daniel Davis wheat field. General Johnston was in the field when hit, mid-way between the peach orchard and the Sarah Bell cabins. He was led off the field by Governor Harris in a southeast direction to the east side of the Hamburg-Savannah road where he was to soon die.
