The Hornets Nest position was only a small area of the sunken road position. The sunken road ran from the Duncan farm on the main Corinth road, southeast across the Eastern Corinth road, past the Manse George cabin and to the Hamburg-Savannah road, just below the Bloody Pond. The Hornets Nest was the area above the Daniel Davis wheat field, running east from the Eastern Corinth road to the area of the Manse George cabin. It did not include the Bloody pond, the peach orchard or any other area of the Sarah Bell cottonfield. To the west of the Hornets' nest, the Duncan field was part of the sunken road position but not the Hornets' nest. General Johnston's attack at 2 pm struck the peach orchard and across the Hamburg-Savannah road, the area held by McArthur's and Stewart's union brigades. General Prentiss fought in the Hornets Nest area but not against General Johnston's attack in the peach orchard.
