Yes, there were two 3rd Tennessee infantry units.

The other Third Regiment of Tennessee Confederate Infantry was organized at Lynnville station, Giles county, on the Nashville and Decatur railroad, on the 16th day of May, 1861, under a special order issued by His Excellency, Isham G. Harris, Governor of Tennessee, and consisted of ten full companies of picked men. Fiver of these companies were composed of volunteers from Giles, three from Maury, one from Lawrence, and one from Lewis county. One of theMaury county companies, however, included many man from Williamson county. [Military Annals of Tennessee, Confederate, John Berrien Lindsley, ed. Broadfoot Publishing Co., 1995, p. 175]

A rather extensive account of the East Tennessee regiment is also contained in the above referenced document including that of Vaughn's brigade. BGen. John Crawford Vaughn raised and first commanded the 3rd.

I am interested in the Sloan memoir, could you describe it, and tell me where i can obtain a copy.
