Womack enlisted as a Private in Company A, 17th Tennessee Infantry May 16, 1861 at Elston Springs/Alisona for a period of 1 year, August 15, 1861 at Cumberland Gap for a period of 9 months and 1 day/9-1/2 months, admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No.4, Richmond, May 16, 1864, gunshot wound to the leg, furloughed May 27 for 60 days, paroled at Appomattox Courty House, Virginia April 9, 1865

A J. Womack, age 19, enlisted as a Private in Captain W. T. Christian's Company, 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army* September 6, 1861 at McMinnville/Camp Smartt, Warren Co., Tennessee, listed on October 4, 1861 as "On extra duty on fortifications at Bakers Hill," transfered to Capt. J. W. Lowles Company A from Capt. Christians Co. April 10, 1862, promoted to 4th Corporal March 1, 1863, wounded September 20, 1863 at the battle of Chickamauga, admitted September 27 to the Floy House and POcmulgee Hospital, Macon, Ga., furloughed for 30 days, September 28, readmitted with Int. Fever Novembe 22, paroled at Greensboro, N. C. May1, 1865,

*This company subsequently became (1st) Company D, 35th (Mountain Rifle) Regiment Tennessee Infantry. It was disbanded about April, 1862, and the men assigned to other companies of the regiment.
