I don't believe you can hang your hat on what you read. Here is an annotated update on Co. D casualties from information found in their CSR files. Errors abound in transcribing lists from one document to another.

Barton, Edward, k. at the battle of Shiloh., Ed Burton

Neilson, T. J., k. at the battle of Shiloh. wounded at Shiloh Died, May 14, 1862, Note: the better term would have been 'mortally wounded at Shiloh"

McAdams, J., k. at the battle of Shiloh. died in April 63 by a wound received at Shiloh, May/June 1862 muster roll recorded as "At home wounded 'Battle of Shiloh'", again, "mortally wounded"

Spain, J. E., k. at the battle of Shiloh. died May 5, 1862, Note: he might have died hours later after wounding, however, killed is appropriate if no other amplifying information given.
