Re: General Green's Division
In Response To: General Green's Division ()

D.M. ,

Col. Stone originally formed what was to become the 6th Texas Cavalry. He was the first commanding officer but proved to be not as popular with his men as Sul Ross who would become their commanding officer(c.o) and go on to glory as the c.o. ogf the 6th and later on the Ross Brigade. Col. Stone then formed the 2nd Partisan Rangers who became a part of Major's Cavalry Regiment. This regiment served in Brig.General Tom Green's ( Tom Green County , Texas) Cavalry Division. I believe The 2nd Partisan Rangers was formed in 1863 and primarily participated in thrwarting Union General Bank's ill - fated Red River Campaign. The Battle of Mansfield ( or Sabine Cross Roads) was the pivotal battle in the campaign . The Confederates defeated Banks and he turned his army around and started back to the southeast , toward his transport boats and the safety of New Orleans ( in Union hands).
If you have a good search engine on your PC you can pick any of a dozen topics such as General Tom Green , Col Stone , Battle of Mansfield , CSA troops in Trans Mississippi are ,etc. and get tons of information. As a start, try these two excellent web sites:

www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.htm

www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/

Ken Jones is the head librarian at Tarleton State Univ. in Stephenville, TX. He has a super site that also has links to other great CSA Trans Miss. sites that will prove helpful. My ancestor served under Tom Green early in the war when Green commanded the 5th TxCav. My ancestor was KIA at Val Verde,NM in the New Mexico campaign.
Probably the three best experts on General Green is Dr Donald Frazier ( at McMurray (sp?)in Abilene,TX) , Odie B. Faulk ( at Hillsboro Jr Coll {probably butchered that too}, and Dr Jerry Thompson at the Univ/Coll.? in Laredo, TX.
Drs Frazier and Thompson may be a little easier to get in contact with and both are great guys who are very, very knowledgeable about the major players and activities of this remote theater of the Civil War.
Good Hunting , Craig
