While you didn't mean to start another thread, you probably did! While attending the annual meeting of the Civil War Preservation Trust in Richmond three years ago, I learned that for some years (at that time) schools in a state in the Heart of Dixie had used Reconstruction as the starting-point for classes in American history. Furthermore, that state's curriculum committee had decided to use 1900 as the starting point in the (then-) coming school year!
