Re: General Green's Division
In Response To: General Green's Division ()

I suspect that company "76" should be Company H. As others have written, Col. B.W. Stone organized the 2nd Texas Partisan Rangers in the winter of 1862/63. It first saw action with Gen. James P. Majors' brigade in Gen. Green's division in Louisiana during the summer of 1863-- participated in the Battle of Donaldsonville and several skirmishes that summer. In Nov, it was at Bayou Bourbeaux (and Carrion Crow too, if memory serves). It returned to Texas in Dec 1863, and posted at Virginia Point on the coast between Galveston and Houston. It was during this time, that your ancestor wrote his letter.

In March 1864, the regiment, now usually called Chisum's Regiment for its new Colonel Isham Chisum, went back to Louisiana and participated in the Red River Campaign from Mansfield to Yellow Bayou. Afterwards it was in Arkansas along the Saline River where it was involved in action at Hurrican Creek in Nov 1864. The regiment wintered in Texas, was dismounted in Feb 1864, and assigned eventually to Walker's Texas Division. It was disbanded in May 1865.

I have done some study of this regiment and would be happy to elaborate on any points that might interest you, if you'd like to e-mail me. I, in turn, would be interested in learning of the contents of your ancestor's letter.

A somewhat longer version of the above synopsis, along with the roster of Co K, 2nd Texas Partisan Rangers, is available at the Kaufman County Texas GenWeb Project website-- link provided below.
