My wife's great grandfather, R.S. Lyles, was in Co.H, 10th Texas Cav, dismounted. enlisted at Toas Texas in 1861. From Rusk Co., Texas, Col Locke, commanding Officer. elected 1st Lt. 1863 and promoted to Capt after the death of W. D. Summers at Chickamuga. He was wounded, captured by Union Forces and rescued by Confederates at the Battle of Chickamuga. Wounded again in late 1864 at Alatoona Pass Ga and killed March 31, 1865. His Unit was defending Spanish Fort near Mobil, Ala at the time of his death. A friend from Rusk Co., Texas a brought his Pocket Bible home to his wife, Mary Jane Lyles, at the end of the War. Would like to hear from anyone with more info about his Unit.
