Every once in a while I find soldiers not in the Brigade rooster and take note but there is no Paul Madison. The Brigade muster rolls were reconstructed by veterans long after the war and so names were forgotten typically those who died of sickness early in the war that I find listed in cemeteries. A chief source used to reconstructed the muster rolls were casualty reports kept in J. B. Robertson’s personal papers so there are very few killed or wounded that were left off but still I know for fact there are some. I have a few original muster rolls taken from newspapers and I have searched all Texas wartime newspapers but I find no Paul Madison.

There is no guarantee that because he was Texan and fought in the East he was in the Brigade. That is an assumption that is often made and passed down as fact. There is also no guarantee that because he lived in a certain local that he joined a certain company.

Many of the men belonged to home guard units that began popping up as early as December 1860 but all which all had to reorganize for service out of state. This maybe the temporary unit you speak of. These units were not formal and finding all the possible muster rolls is unlikely.

I have a suggestion in that you should at search the 1860 census, which can be done electronically at any library with online access. Once you are sure of his residence then check the county history books, which usually include a chapter on the Civil War and sometimes muster rolls or lists of soldiers. Your local librarian can help with interlibrary loans. You might get lucky.
