Re: 1st Cavalry, Texas State Troops

My great-great-grandfather served in Company C of this battalion. He was Pvt. Samuel D. Jones. He enlisted in Panola County July 17, 1863 for six months. He was born in 1833 in Alabama and was a farmer. He is described in his military record as being 5 feet 11 inches tall; fair complexion; eyes blue and hair dark. His company commander was Capt. Spearman Holland and the battalion commander Lt. Col. D.D. Holland. They were assigned to Gillespie's Cavalry Brigade; Slaughter's Division in the Eastern Sub-District of Texas. According to the Official Records they were assigned to Camp Wharton at McNeel's Plantation on Jan. 21, 1864. After his six month enlistment was up, he served in Company E, 11th Texas Infantry Regiment and finished the war with that unit, according to his Confederate Pension record from the State of Texas.
