Larry:

This is interesting. I found a "Gip" Barnes on the 1860 Collin Co census (FN 467) shown as a 26-year-old carpenter, b. in Kentucky, living with the George Armstrong family. We have Joseph and Philip Barnes in Co I (raised in Collin Co).
Neither of these men was born in KY. Joseph was living in Lamar Co in 1860. Philip was living with his family in Collin Co. It was not unusual for young men 15-30 to be living with farm families during this period. In fact, they form a considerable portion of the manpower for the 9th Texas Inf.

Gideon Barnes did not fight in any battles because he died before leaving Texas.

You can obtain his service record by sending a request to the National Archives. There won't be much there, but I would want to have it. -- Gary
