I think there's some confusion here. The captain of the Neptune No 2 at Galveston during the battle was a Captain Sangster. There were numerous river-boat captains or former riverboat men in either the Texas troops or CSA present. There were also two steamers with "volunteers" hanging back as reinforcements. The former captain of the Dodge was Captain W.F. Rogers of the Marine Service. He "defected" with his vessel to the Confederate side, later becoming an Acting Master's Mate in the C.S. Navy. He was among the Navy personnel that went to the Trinity River with CDR W.W. Hunter when that officer was forced to turn the Dodge over to the CSA. It isn't clear whether he was among the personnel who joined Lt. Barney as part of the CSN crew of the Harriet Lane for a few months, or whether he resigned his acting commission.
