Re: William A. Seaton, Lane's Reg.

Sheryl,if he was in the W.P Lane's Rangers, that was named for W.P Lane a citizen of Marshall,Texas,he would have served under Col. John S. Ford on the frontier of Texas at the beginning of war in the 2rd Texas Cavalry. This unit was formed by Capt. Sam Richardson of Marshall,Texas. After trying for many years to have this unit to become an independent unit,he persuaded ninty of the orginal 100 to rejoin at the reorgiznation in 1862. They moved north to Arkansas and on to Arkansas Post to help defend the fort.Capt.Richardson and about half his men were captured there. After exchange they were assigned to Tenn. Infantry unit, but this did not set to well with a Texas unit commanded by a non-Texan and not being a Texas Cavalry unit most left back to Texas. In 1864 what was left of this company became a part of Charles L. Morgan's Regiment, which was a mix of different companies, and assigned to Col. William Parson's Cavalry Brigade. Parts of W. P. Lane's Rangers was attached so many times to different units that to find what unit he ended the war with will be some doing. When the men left Tenn. some rejoined Capt. Richardson, some joined the 21st Texas Cavalry or other Texas units, and some just went home. So good luck with your search ! Have you tryed Texas State Ardhives to see if they may have something about him? My grt-grt-grdfather was captured at Arkansas Post and I had to contact the Missouri State Archives, because he died in St.Louis. Hope this helps some !
