Re: Jones of Collins county musters

The muster roll dated July, 1863, of Capt. Edward Chamber's Company lists Granville A. Jones, Pvt., age 41, Co. "D", Collin County, 15th Infantry Brigade, Texas State Troops. He enrolled (drafted) at Camp Stonewall or McKinney, July, 1863.

In March 1864, acting Brig. Gen. Smith P.Bankhead sent three infantry companies from Collin County to Harrisburg (Houston) on detached duty. The companies were: Capt. Edward Chambers' Co. D, Capt. Josiah Nichols' Co.A, and Capt. Jordan O. Straughan's Co. E. In addition, four Confederate cavalry companies of Col. James G. Bourland's Border Regiment and four Comfderate cavalry companies of Col. Ebenezer McCord's Frontier Regiment were detached and sent to Harrisburg.

By the spring of 1864, it was obvious that a federal invasion of North Texas through Indian Territory from Fort Smith Arkansas and Fort Scott Kansas was not going to occur and many settlers had moved back east from the frontier areas to avoid Indian attacks. That allowed the state and the Confederate army to send companies to Harrisburg and were disbursed to other areas along the Texas coast. Where or what regiment they were finally attached would be difficult to determine.
