It seems that the 6th Texas Infantry was particularly troubled by Measles. It seem they left men behind all along their route of march all the way to Camp Texas near Benton, Arkansas. They were still were having men come down with Measles at Rockport and Camp White Sulphur Springs, near Pine Bluff, Arkansas in July 1862.

This seems to be quite a long period of time for one regiment to be so effected by a single outbreak of such a disease. I have often wondered if this were actually reoccurances of the measles itself within the regiment. Or of complications from exposure and treatment methods of 1862 medicine.

In my research of Camp White Sulphur Springs where the 6th Texas was camped from mid July until mid September 1862, prior to moving to Arkansas Post/Fort Hindman, I have found that most of the men in hospital there were suffering from complications such as pneumonia and mercury poisoning from the medicines.

Hope this gives some insight to your search.

I found that generally men had better chance of survival when they were treated in private homes where herbal medicines where in more common useage, than in the hospitals were such medicines as "Blue Mass" (mercury pills) were given for almost any ailment. When the Confederate Army started to run low on the standard medicines and they started using the herbal home remedies the survival rates of men in hospitals for illness seem to improve.

However, this is difficult to determine accurately because by that time (late 1862) the influx of new recruits, from the Conscription Act of April 1862, had run the course of camp diseases. Oddly enough it doesn't seem like measles itself as a disease was the killer. But more often the exposure of the men to the weather in poor camping conditions while they had this disease and there by developing Pneumonia that was the real killer.
