I've been on a couple of CW tours with Ed Bearss, the last one at Vicksburg where, of course, he was the Chief Historian for many years and instrumental in the raising of the CAIRO (an engineering disaster, however, when compared to the manner in which the Hunley was recovered.) One can't help but be just amazed at the breadth and depth of his knowledge! The claim is (and probably more truth than fiction) that he could be dropped by parachute over any CW battlefield and, upon landing, give an hour lecture on what happened on that particular spot.
