Re: roster of Whitfield/Ross Cav Bde

The neucleus of John W. Whitfield's Legion was the 27th Texas Cavalry Regiment in addition to Capt. E.R. Hawkins' Company from Hunt County, Capt. John H. Broocks' Company from St.Augustine County, and Capt. B.H. Northworth's Company from Jasper County. These units formed the 1st Texas Legion or Whitfield's Legion.

Maj. Whitfield's Legion was combined with Brig.Gen.H.E.McCulloch's Brigade at Fort Smith Arkansas. McCulloch's Brigade consisted of the 3rd Texas Cavalry, 6th Texas Cavalry, and the 9th Texas Cavalry. Maj. Whitfield was placed in command and the legion and was then assigned to Brig.Gen. Lawrence Sullivan Ross's Brigade on October 23, 1862. Major John W. Whitfield was promoted to brigidier general and was placed in command of the brigade in May 1863.

Brig.Gen. Ross was promoted to major general and placed in command in December 1863. Col. Dudley W.Jones was in command of the Texas Brigade at the surrender on May 4,1865.

It is possible to get the original rosters of the individual regiments that finally formed Whitfield/Ross's Texas Brigade by searching the NPS-CWSSS. The rosters of the unassigned companys from Hunt, St.Augustine and Jasper Counties would appear in the roster of Whitfield's 27th Texas Cavalry Regiment as listed in the NPS site.
