The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Jasper Caldwell/Walker County,Tx

Casey,

I have done quite a bit of research in the Civil War soldier records of the areas of old Danville and Waverly, Texas, which were divided by the Montgomery/Walker County lines. Jasper was only ten years old in 1860, according to the census. There is no way he would have been allowed to join a CSA unit during the war unless he lied about his age and passed, though he may have been a member of the local militia (Texas State Troops) when he reached fourteen. If he "went off" anywhere, it would have been to haul supplies or herd cattle. His name is not in the CSA rolls. His name could possibly be found in the records of the Walker County militia units, but the only way to access all of those is to visit the Texas State Archives and read through the Adjutant General's Correspondence Files for Walker and Montgomery Counties. There is a whole body of unpublished, unindexed records there that we rarely hear about.

Sorry I am late seeing this.
