Most of the men were from Hempstead, Fairfield, Georgetown, and Waxahachie, and Ellis and Hill counties. This unit served in Hawes' and Steele's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department and skirmished the Federals in Arkansas and Louisiana. During 1865 it was in Northern Texas guarding approaches from the Indian Territory. The regiment was included in the surrender on June 2. Its commanders were Colonel William H. Obed Vanpool, age 36, appointed as a 1st Lieutenant in Captain H. W. Kyser's Company (Kaufman Guards, No. 1), 4th Regiment Texas Dragoons*, October 28, 1861 at Camp Hebert, entered General Hospital, Houston, Texas December 23, 1861, Asmathiac Pneumonia, returned to duty December 29, 1861 his file contains his signature to the swearing of an Oath of Allegiance to the Confederate States of America, other than a voucher for provisions dated November 12, 1861 at Hempstead, Texas, there are no further records of his service

Note: The next company muster roll which has survived covered the period July 1, to November 1, 1862, dated April 6, 1863. Thus, the muster rolls for the intervening period from December 1861 through June 1862 are missing. As there is no mention of him on the April 6, 1863 muster, he must have dropped out of the regiment, either, by discharge, desertion, death, transfer, etc. by that date.

*This company was successively designated as Captain Kyser's Company, 4th Regiment Texas Dragoons, Company I and Company G, 12th Regiment Texas Cavalry.

The 12th (also known as the 4th and as Parson's Texas Cavalry was mustered into the service of the Confederate States October 28, 1861, for twelve months and re-organized in May, 1862. In the field it was also called Dragoons and Mounted Volunteers.

Private O. Vanpool, Company K, 2nd Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers* appears on a Regimental Return of April 1865, marked as absent "DS. after absentees So. No. not known Feb. of 1865 Lauas[?] Brig. Hd. qrs.", no other records

Note: This hand written note is not easily readable. You would need to get copies of these two microfilm copies to see if you can transcribe. When I visit the National Archives and run into these problems I get the Microfilm clerks to pull the actual hard copy files for me to review in the Reading Room.

This Regimental Return is the only surviving muster roll type document for this regiment.

*This organization was raised under the authority given to Colonel B. Warren Stone by the Secretary of War which was dated September 5, 1862. It was first designated the 38th Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers but it was subsequently known as the 2nd Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers as Stone's Regiment Texas Cavalry, as Crill Miller's Regiment Texas Dismounted Cavalry and, finally, as Chisam's Regiment Texas Cavalry Dismounted.
