I have a copy of "The Pictorial History of Polk County" I and my family have been here continously since 1839. Following is mentioned in this book. This is exactly as is written in this book which was printed in 1976.

Company K, Fifth Texas Regiment, Hoods Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia
Organized late in May 1861; with two 6-pounder cannonsand were drilled for artillery service. When they learned they could enter active service earlier as an infantry company, they abanoned the artillery service. Leaving Livingston on foot, Sept. 3, 1861 they arrived at Liberty on Sept. 9. After being mustered in service, a long trip to New Orleans was begun.Wading waist deep in water through the bayou country between Beaumont and New Orleans they conquered the floods due to heavy rains and presented themselves for duty. They proceeded by rail to Richmond, Virginia where they were assigned to Fort Bragg.
