Re: Ben McCulloch - Feb.28,1861

Thats very interesting Vicki..We really do not know what flag Jefferson loaned to McCulloch. He was that Mississippi Militia officer way back in the 1840s.I have seen the sketch in Harpers but its been so long ago I cant recollect its details.Would seem odd they would have the Texas flag upside down.I have fairly recently seen an extremly rare original photograph taken at the time of McCulloch's mounted Texians(many with very long rifles)near the Alamo.Seems like the Texas Archives has it on their site.

That was certainly an exciting and dramatic time when the Texians rode into San Antonio and demanded the US Government get out of their country.Colonel RE Lee was even in town.

Regarding the McCulloch letter. The late Collin Co. historian Helen Hall sent me the original(by regular mail!)along with several other Texas CSA related about 15 years ago.I immediatly copied and returned by Registered Mail and sent copies to the Confederate Research Center at Hillsboro.
