36th vs. 32nd Texas Cavalry

I'm researching my great-great-grandfather from Texas, William Isaac Daniell, who served the Confederacy in the Civil War. When he filed for a pension on 13 Nov 1899, he described his service in Company D, 32nd Texas Cavalry, Colonel Woods Regiment. According to his hand-written letter, he joined in April 1862 and was mustered out in May 1865 and fought in the Mansfield/Pleasant Hill Battles. I'm confused about what outfit he actually served in because other records refer to his "group" as being the 36th Regiment, including an inscription on his tombstone. I've also seen information that indicates that the 32nd and 36th are one and the same, but without explaining. Since I don't understand the different groups and how they were organized, can someone help me understand what I've been reading? Thank you.
