For example, in the Officer's files, a letter by A. G. Dickinson (and listed under Dickinson's name), written from San Antonio, June 22, 1863, in which he complains that:
The fourth Regt Arizona Brigade consists of two companies numbering about 40 men each under command of Lt Col Shoahwalter, and stationed about 5 miles above this Post. they are without arms and entirely without discipline. Complaints are being made continually by the stock raisers in the vicinity of their camp, of the manner in which their property is abused and whenever a member of them visit this city a row or disturbance is invariably the consequence. Col Shoalwatter has applied I understand for order to report to Genl S. P. Bankhead, it would be wise if they were on duty—If they remain here I should like to use them as scouts between this point and Eagle Pass, as numbers of deserters are escaping by that route into Mexico—if used in that service however they should be armed.
There is additional correspondence that mentions his command in the Rio Grande area.
This may all be old news to you, but I thought I would mention it just in case.
