In addition General Ross was an early president of Texas A&M University. The Ross Volunteers,a student military honor guard,are present at all Texas Governor inaugeral ceremonies. Ross has a large bronze statue on the campus. Ex president Jefferson Davis was first offered the college president's position but respectfully declined due to prior business engagements.

Parson's Texas Cavalry is the name for Texas A&M's mounted cadet corps.
