I will go back to make sure, but I think, Ross was leading a company of Indians when he saw Parker and had her brought out. Cynthia was the mother of Chief Quanna Parker who was brought out with her. Ross was on one venture with Earl Van Dorn, when they were both wounded and almost died. Ross a 20 year old was offered a US Army Captains rank. He also killed Chief Nacona in hand to hand combat. On one of those recons he found an Indian boy and raised him as a son.

Ross also was a County Sheriff and established the code for that organization which is fairly intact today.

Ross was President of Texas A&M after he was Governor. He managed to take a college on the verge of collapse and give it heart. Today they they are trying to kill that heart and take old Sully, the statue away.

Ross died after about 4 years as president. He had been on a hunting trip to the Lampass Hill Country and was caught in a snow storm. They thought he was recovering, when he died.

After the ill fated Tennessee Campaign, Ross and several of his officers and men were in Texas seeking provisions and recruits. Those that say he was on furlough, make it sound as if he were shirking duty at the end of the war. The brigade had gone from 6500 to about 800. It had led the advance into Tennessee and the retreat from Tennessee. Because of him and Forrest, Hood's Army escaped, but it was broken.
