The white girl that Ross brought out from that first battle he reared as a daughter. He named her Lizzie after his future wife. During the first battle Ross received both an arrow wound and the Indian then shot him with his own Sharps rifle. He almost died. He remained on the battlefielf for five days till he stabilized.

His second battle was leading a Ranger Company and some civilians. They surprised the Indians on the Pease River and won a decisive battle. Ross shot and wounded Chief Nacona and his NCO whose family had been killed by Nacona, put him to death. Ross saw the blue eyes of an Indian squaw and through interrogation, found her to be Cynthia Parker. For detail read Judith Ann Benner's, "Sul Ross, Soldier, Statesman and Educator." As they were leaving Ross saw a young Indian boy in the grass. He picked him up and put him behind him on his horse. He raised this boy as a son, called Peace.

Ross was elected Governor by a higher percentage of the vote than any other Texas Governor. Only Ma Ferguson came close.
