"J H Tarkington enlisted in the service as a volunteer of the Confederate States
in the early part of the Revolution.He then hired a Substitute paying him $600.00.
He was then Conscripted and put in a different detailed Service in Texas until 1864
when he was assigned to duty in Capt._______________________Co. and Col.
________________Regiment and was stationed in different places in Texas and died
at Hempstead,Texas while in the service in February 1865."
I assume she could not remember the unit etc he was in, as to the blanks. I was able to
locate the Company he was in, at least in the last portion of his service.
" Co I 25th Texas Calvary" which from what I can find out was at one time known as
3rd Texas Lancers under C C Gillespie.
He was in this regiment in Jan and Feb 1865 and sick in hospital in Hempstead TX.
Where he died. Any records as to the exact place he was buried is unknown and no
markers etc in Hempstead TX.
I take it he hired someone to servie in his place and paid him $600.00. The rest I'm not
sure what would have taken place. Did they come get him or did he go on his own etc.
Also how would I search to see of any records of a unit prior to the Co I 25th Texas Calvery.
Also we can't locate the record, if there ever was one, showing exact date in Feb he died and what
was done with body. Since we can't locate that, the marker the VA has given us will be put at
the foot of his widow along with a dedication service.
We greatly appreciate anyone who may can clarify the above or tell me where to research.
