Re: Andrew J. Martin, TX unit KIA Shiloh

George, thank you very much for this explanation. We now know that none of the Andrew J. Martins we have identified were killed at Shiloh. If I read what you stated about our man in Co. G correctly, he deserted just prior to the battle. Unless there are further records on him, he never returned. Am I right?

I certainly agree that it was a popular thing to do to name children after famous people in those days, epecially presidents. In fact, in a somewhat humorous twist, old Barton named my gggrandfather Martin Vanburen Martin after the president. He was two year younger than Clark (the one sent to Rock Island), but I think he managed to get into the war, under the initials M.V. , and I am still trying to track him down. I think old daddy Barton hid this fact from the court in his testimony.

At this point in time, all I have manage to do is identify two boys, one age 30-35 at time of enlistment and the other age 35-40 at time of enlistment. There is another group presumably by a second wife of Barton as yet unidentified that could have been in Texas. I shall continue to work on that.

Thank you all for your help. If anyone comes up with any other Andrew J.'s or ages, please let me know. It will help narrow things down.
