This thread reminded me of a question I have had for awhile.
My ancestor, Edward C. Womack, served in Waller's 13th TX Cavalry Battalion and was promoted to Sergeant. Prior to this he had served in a Louisiana Infantry Regiment before being discharged (probably due to the measles).
He applied for a pension in 1909, and his application was rejected.
I don't think there was any doubt that he had served honorably.
There was a handwritten note on the front of the application, stating,
"Tax Rolls"
"Proof issues to be OK"
Did one have to be indigent to receive a pension in Texas?
