Yes, your right about the year, but I didn't necessarily say that flag. There has always been a close connection between the church and this country. GOD isn't just a made up thing that people took lightly back then. There were 2 Great Revivals in our history. One that was around 1750 or so, then 1820's and to the 1830's. Also, many went west with one book, the family Bible. It taught the children how to read, their "numbers", and about ethics and why they should be Christian. Any family that didn't stay together, Billy the Kid, Mark Twain, and others had different lives than the average person back then. (go figure)

Anyway, the church had flags. And don't forget that there is the Church of England which is strong on the east coast (again, go figure) and they had their flag as well, going back to Henry himself. Between the state of Virginia and the city of New Orleans, we were not that big in the demographics area. Even today the population of Mississippi is still below 15 million, I believe. But the major part of that population was on the east coast. The first flag poles came from the towns with the crosses on top. again..."Down with the eagle and up with the cross." And if they didn't come from a church where would you say they came from? There may have not been but 100 flags with crosses on them but that would have been enough to put that line in a song.
