Merkel about the best thing for you to do would be, as Gary mentioned,order his service records as it will mention what battles he may have fought in. The book "This Band of Heroes" only tells of the part of 17th that fought east of Mississippi River. True Wade H. Walters was mustered into service in Co. I,but on April 22nd Company I(Capt. Patrick Henry's Co.)became company B 28th Texas Cavalry Regiment. Wade Walters was a member of Co. D of the 17th under Granbury's Texas Brigrade which fought east of the Mississippi River. Anne J. Bailey's book "Between the Enemy and Texas" will give you a look at some of the battles the 17th west of Mississippi fought in.
