Most of my reseach on the 28th Texas has been focused on Co. H, which came from Freestone County. My great gramdfather and several great uncles were members of Co. H.

I really don't know anything about Matthew Hardie, except that he is on the Roster of Co. E. It is very possible that he was in the Military forces of the United States and quit to become a member of the 28th Texas. Many southern soldiers did that. But almost all the officers of the U.S. Army were given Officer position in the Confederate Army.

I'm sorry that I can't help you more. In the near future I'm going to make a trip to the Confederate Research Center in Hillsboro, TX to check some info. I'll try to look for any info on Mr. Hardie.
