Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find out what happened to Matthew Hardie who entered into the 28th Cav Co E, and whose only information online is the Muster role shown on this site www.angelfire.com/tx/RandysTexas/28thCavMust.html
and info from the American CW research data base which indicated they had no residence , listed no middle initial, didn't know if he survived the war, nor where he enlisted....just that he entered as a Private. I am really confused because I have a presentation sword that has the following inscription on the scabbard: Presented to Lt Matthew Hardie by the men of TX Cav Co. E
The sword has US on one side and an Eagle on the other side, and was made by a German Firm F. Horster....who was in business from 1830-1863...after that, it was E. & . F. Hoster. I don't know where to look to see if he bacame a Lt. later, if he was one of the men who were transferred out of the 28th, if so, to where? and even more confusing....why would a dismounted Cav. group give a presentation sword to Matthew Hardie if they weren't mounted? Someone suggested the sword was "found" on the battlefield and given to him, but that makes no sense to me....the engraving isn't scratched in, it is plain, but professional. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
