Alan,

Thank you for the help. It would be helpful to know if my g-grandfather was included on that inspection report. I know from "New River Notes" some of the battles that the 51st was involved in and I know he's on the muster role of volunteers for Patrick County, Va. There was also a William Nunn listed on the same muster role along with Edward Nunn Under the 24th Va. Inf. company I. I think the 24th was involved with the Army of Northern Va. because some of the men in the 24th inf. are listed as killed at Gettysburg. There is an reenactedment group for company D of the 51st, I think my g-grandfather was in company H of the 51st, or there could have been two William Nunns in Stuart, Patrick county at that time. G-granfather William had a brother named Edward (whose name appears under William's on the 24th's muster role, both were sons of Major Nunn. I have found letters and journals written by members of the 51st and I'm planning on using these in my class along with letters and journals from Union soldiers. I know that the 51st was part of Wharton's Brigade. When I read these letters and journals it is like stepping back in time. One of the journals describes battles the 51st was involed in and I wonder if my g-grandfather was there. Our family has
been in Virginia some say since 1620 so I know there was a strong connection and love for Virginia. My mother is the last of 11 children of Mary Jane Craddock Nunn and Samuel Nunn, Samuel being the only adult surviving son of William Nunn.
I'm also interested in my maternal grandmother's family (Craddocks)since there were a few Craddocks on the muster rolls also. My father John Handy of Patrick County may have also had family that fought in the 51st or 24th. I never saw my dad after 1957 and he died in "94" so there are many unanswered questions. Thanks again for the help. My grandson watched "Gods and Generals" and "Gettysburg" with me this summer and he has become very interested in the Civil War. He likes Robert E. Lee(and Traveler), Stonewall Jackson and J. Lawrence Chamberlain. I can only encourage him and hope he comes to love the history of our country as much as I do.
