My daughter is researching a time period from January 1, 1863 through June 30, 1863 for a middle-school history project about the life and times of a family living in Virginia. She came to me late asking for help and I have been searching the internet and finally came to this site. Her search has led to looking for some biographical information about the 11th Virginia Infantry. So far, I have only found references to two officers, Brig. Gen. James L. Kemper and Col. Joseph Mayo.
Brig Gen Kemper supposedly commanded a part of the Virginia forces in which the 11th Infantry was connected to, but I have been unable to locate which force that they were attached to, if any. I have not had any luck finding more about him, except some previous personal military history and some of what happened to him after the Civil War.
The only resource where Col. Mayo is in, is a middle-school text. It briefly says he led the 11th Inf. in one sqirmish. Nothing else has been located.
1. Does anyone here have information or direction in which to look?
2. In what part of the Virginia forces did the 11th Inf. serve?
and lastly, 3. Are there any histories of this unit or regiment available?

I would appreciate any and all help in finding out about this particular unit, if at all possible.
