Re: Chinkapin Rangers of P.W. County

I found out a few more things- apparently W Brawner joined the 15th Va Cav late in 1861 or early in 1862, because OR reports indicate he was there in mid 1862. Kincheloe was left in charge of the Rangers. I believe I remember that it was William Simpson Kincheloe. There are an awful lot of Kincheloes around Union Mills at the start of the war. Another was Lt William James Kincheloe, adjutant of the 49th Va, and several other Kincheloes are mentioned in conjunction with the activities of the Chinquapin Rangers, or, as the Union officers referred to them, "Kincheloes' band of rebels".I think if you do the research in the OR, you'll find what you're looking for. Checking some of the books on Fairfax station and Fairfax Co during the war would probably be good too. They fought with Mosby when he came into their area a few times, but most of the reports on guerrilla activity through 1864 in the Fairfax, Occoquan, Manassas area are probably the Rangers under Kincheloe.-Barrett
