Alan,

Bradley is a good artist. I've met him at reenactments in the past. He uses photos taken at events as reference material for his work. Most painters do. Here's a little detail in that particular painting to scope out. Any soldier with a sleeve rank has the stripes affixed to his sleeve in the form of a patch. The Confederate Military did not use patches for rank insignia. The stripes were sewn directly to the sleeve of the coat. So for this painting I'd say he used some reenactor photos for reference as a lot of "us" (not me) use patches. The Federal Military did use patches. I'm a graphic artist and a serious detail freak. If you like artillery as much as I do there are two Dale Gallon prints that are super. "Old Pete", Longstreet in the middle of James Dearing's guns (Stribling's Battery), Faquier Artillery on Peter Rogers farm at Gettysburg on 3 July and "Reilley's Battery", 1st North Carolina Artillery on the Confederate right at Gettysburg on 2 July. Reilley's Battery was trading iron with Hazelett on Little Round Top.
