Thankfully the NPS has nothing to do with Saylor's Creek. I would hate to see another Disney style visitor center like the recent Gettysburg fiasco built in Amelia County.

The State of Va. is moving to upgrade the visitor experience at Saylor's creek. That takes money and is in competetion with many other projects. They have hired a very competent person to help with this project but funds are short.

There are some that would like to see the battlefields stay as close to their wartime appearance as possible. I must admit, I am one of those. Saylor's Creek is one of those that can still be saved from urban sprawl.

There are preservation people at work trying to save battlefields that many are not aware of. Perhaps the most notable is the Civil War Preservation Trust. http://www.civilwar.org/

It may surprise some that most of the recent land saved in the name of the National Park Service has been bought by the CWPT. The NPS does not have funds to buy and many times manage the additional land. CWPT raises money, buys the land and turns it over to the NPS.

Now it is time for a shameless plug for the Civil War Preservation Trust. Everyone who enjoys these forums should at least visit the CWPT site and see what is going on. The battlefields saved by the CWPT can be counted in the hundreds and maybe thousands of acres but there is still much work to be done. A membership costs what one would pay for a meal at a local restaurant. http://www.civilwar.org/
