Saylor's Creek was somewhat of a running battle and what you saw was the battle at the Hillsman House. There was more to it but not where you were.

I would contact Petersburg National Military Park. Chris Calkins wrote a paperback book "Thirty Six Hours Before Appomattox" which covers the Saylor's Creek battles. It's a pretty good description with maps and the book may be carried at the Park's book store since Mr. Calkins works there.
