I trying to find out information on the Conf. troopers who on Oct. 29, 1862, were surprised by a cavalry force from New Creek,(W.) Va. while they were driving a herd of cattle towards Petersburg. Although Lt. Col. Quirk (23rd Illinois Inf) who commanded the Yankees states that the men were from Lee's Brigade in Stuart's command, I suspect that they were some of Imboden's 1st Va. Partisan Rangers.
