Re: Cavalry skirmish near Petersburg (W.) Va.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the input... I know my G.G.G.G.-Grandfather John H. Boon(e)
fought for the 7th Va. Cavalry/ Harris' Co/Ashby's Cavalry; and must
have died sometime prior to July 13th, 1863 - (Fact) 1) Because I found
him listed (alive) with his wife Ruth and their children, living in
Hardy Co, "Old" Va/W.Va, under the 1860 Census. But, only found his
wife Ruth and their children, living in Sherman, Romney, Hampshire Co,
W.Va., under the 1870 Census. So this is how I'm almost certain, that
John H. Boon(e) did indeed die during the Civil War, and most likely,
sometime during late June of 1863 (to) early July of 1863. But, for
some reason I can't find out what battle he last fought (and possible
died in). (2) I did find where his (widowed) wife Ruth Boone had filed
a claim for her husband John H. Boone, (which stated he served in the
7th Va. Cavalry/ Harris' Co/Ashby's Cavalry); and the claim was dated
for July 13th, 1863.

Someone else told "Me," that sometimes after a soldier was killed during
battle. It would often take weeks (or) even up to a month, to report his
death to the local Newspaper, to be listed as the dead. But again, I'm
at a loss, since I still can't find any burial tombstone for either John
H. Boon(e), nor his wife Ruth E. (Unknown) Boon(e); buried in either the
Hardy or Hampshire Co, "Old" Va/W.Va., area. I would doubt, that their
bodies would have been buried elsewhere, since their surviving children
all stayed in the Hardy/Hampshire W.Va, area. But sadly, I have asked
around (to all and any remaining Boone relatives, to see if they knew of
any helpful information regarding John and Ruth Boone's whereabouts); but
none of them know a thing... Heck, I think I know (more) about John H.
and wife Ruth Boon(e), than my older relatives "all put together." But,
only because I've been doing research on them. :)

Regarding the 1860 Census (question): I guess I was referring to John
H. Boon(e)s younger brother Samuel Lewis Boon(e), which I can't find
under the 1850 or 1860 Census; living in either Hardy or Hampshire Co,
"Old" Va/present day W.Va., area. But I later find him (alive) under
the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census. So I'm wondering if Samuel Lewis Boon(e)
might have been a "dodger" hiding out "somewhere" to avoid the Civil War,
since I can't find his name listed under the Civil War Database, that you
had mentioned... Samuel was born around 1831, (so I'm sure he would have
been old enough to serve, being around 29 or 30, during the beginning of
the Civil War. I was told, by another Boone cousin. That John H. and
Samuel Boon(e)'s parents (James D. BOON and wife Catherine Ann (Smith)
Boon - had later moved the rest of their Boon Family to Fairfield, Tus-
carawas Co, Ohio, sometime prior to the 1860 Census); and the 1860 Census
seems to back this up as true. But still no (son) Samuel Lewis Boon(e)
is listed as living with them. So ole' Samuel was hiding out "somewhere."

My only other conclusion is: It's possible that Samuel Lewis Boon(e) is
under a different "nickname" or using another first name, under the 1850
and 1860 Census. And maybe that's why I couldn't find him (or) his family;
until the 1870 Census, and so on.

Thanks again, for all your help on this.

Take care,
Rebecca Wilson
