Here is some information relative to the battle on 6 Feb., and the issue of whether Terry's Bde broke and ran. From the reports below, it looks like it was a see-saw battle with more than one unit being forced back in confusion. Also you will see my notation indicating the regiments in Terry's Bde. It was a consolidated brigade, consisting of the Virginia regiments of Johnson's division that had been mostly captured at Spotsylvania C.H., 12 May 64. For tactical control, the regiments maintained their former brigade organizations, although none of the "brigades" numbered more than a decent sized regiment: 1st (Stonewall) Bde, consisting of the 2,4,5, 27 and 33Va; 2nd (J.M. Jones') Bde, consisting of the 21, 25, 42, 44, 48Va; and the 3d (Steuart's) Bde, consiting of the 10, 23, 37Va. The sources indicated below are as follows: 28AA -- OR, Serial 95; 39 -- One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry, John H. Worsham; James Robertson, editor, McCowat Mercer Press. Jackson, Tenn. 1964

Gordon's Corps Fights Battle of Armstrong’s Mill or Dabney's Saw Mill Along Hatcher's Run -- 6 Feb

865/02/06
R.E. Lee rpts that after several hours heavy fighting, Pegram killed and some confusion occurred in his div. It was pressed back to its original position. Evans' div, which had been ordered by Gordon to spt Pegram, attacked and forced enemy back, but was in turn compelled to retire. Arrival of Mahone's div drives enemy back to his lines on Hatcher's Run [48Va: 28AA,p. 381]

Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon, cmdg 2d Corps this day, reported later that Evans's div, sent forward in support of Pegram, formed on Pegram's left and drives enemy back. Enemy strength then forces Evans back. Evans readily reforms near enemy lines and "again advanced with spirit." Pegram also charges on Evans’ rt. Enemy driven back. Pegram killed; Bde cdr, Col Hoffman wded and part of Pegram's div thrown into confusion.

The battle "had been obstinately contested for several hours" when Mahone’s div arrives, fills gap between Evans and Pegram. Whole CSA line now advances and drives enemy 'in confusion" to his works along Hatcher's Run [48Va: 28AA,p. 390]

Col. W.R. Peck, this day cmdg Peck's Bde (1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,14,15 La), Evan's div, Gordon's 2d Corps, reported later that on this day, having moved to CS picket line south of Hatcher's Run, the bde was led to support of Gen Pegram and formed line of battle in a wood with Terry's Bde [2,4,5,10,21,23,25,27,33, 37,42,44,48Va] to Peck's left.

Twice Peck advances to edge of woods and drives enemy "from the sawdust pile in the field." but twice he is forced to retire because of the "wavering and falling back of the line on our left."

Pegram's div comes up on Peck's rt and a third charge is made which drives enemy beyond field and sawdust pile. Peck holds sawdust pile for a short time until troops to his rt and left give way and he falls back to woods.

In woods Peck reforms and deploys with Terry's Bde on his left and Pegram's div on his rt. Mahone's div arrives, but Peck's Bde, out of ammo, does not participate in any further action.

Brig. Gen. Evans, div cdr, orders Peck's Bde to bivouac for night in some pines near the line. [48VA: 28AA,392]

2nd Brigade [21, 25,42, 44, 48Va] Thrown into Confusion But Rallies

865/02/06
2d Bde engaged at Hatcher's Run. While bde was marching by the flank thru dense pine woods, it was suddenly assailed by sharpshooters. This threw men back in confusion, and bde fell back out of the fire to reform. Capt Reuben Jordan, F/21Va, rallies 7 men (two from 42Va, two from 25Va, 3 from 21Va) and places them along the road to stop advance of enemy at that point. Yankees approach and command Jordan to surrender. Jordan answers with shots from men. He stops Union advance, and is complimented on spot by Gen Gordon. Gordon then rides to 2d Bde and spoke to bde of Jordan's bravery. Then Gordon ordered bde forward [48Va: 39,p. 180]
