Julius Grodon Miller

I am looking for any militray history regarding my great grandfather, Julius Gordon Miller. What information I have is that he attended VMI, Class of 1860 and may have been involved in the company providing security when John Brown was hung. According to the Daughters of the Confederacy certificate issued in the 1920's to my grandmother, he served in the 5th Virginia Cavalry, I believe Company F. Later, according to some letters from a great aunt, he was granted leave to teach mathematics at a military academy (after Fredericksburg). He may also have served in an infantry regiment as a historical record that I was able to retirev online showed he was a private. VMI's records are scant but do show his enrollment and the possibility he was at Brown's hanging as there were 2 Millers in the company present. Thanks for any help. I would also appreciate any history on the 5th V. Cav.
