I should have mentioned before that Robert E. Lee had two servants with him during the war, both were former slaves from Arlington House and were freed before the end of 1862. One was Meredith, the other was Perry. Meredith left after being given his freedom, Perry remained as a paid employee. I think I know the identity of Billy, but will keep that for a more private exchange.
