Edward Chambers Craig owned a plantation/farm of 300+ acres at Port Walthall Junction north of Petersburg. I have a copy of the deed. The location of the home is identified on several period maps. The Craig property is also mentioned extensively in the book, Bermuda Hundred Campaign, as battles occurred in the vicinity on two consecutive days in early May of 1864. I also have a period newspaper clipping that mentions the battle involving the Craig property. The home was also used as a Confederate hospital and Mr. Craig was reimbursed for that use . I have a copy of the claim/invoice. Some records indicate that Mr. Craig served in the Quartermaster Department in Petersburg. As E. C. Craig was above the age for active service (45), it is more likely that he served in any one of the numerous "local defence companies" in the area, rather than in a regular army unit. All men between the ages of 17 and 50 were subject to military service, but only those up to the age of 45 could be conscripted for front line service. There are records that list these local defense companies, but those records seldom include complete rolls of members, as most weren't really a part of the official Confederate Provisional Army. Mr. Craig may have held the rank of Major in one of the local defence companies in Petersburg. Mr. Craig was also a part owner of the Chester Hotel in Chesterfield County before the War. After the War, Mr. Craig and most of the family moved to Henderson, Kentucky. Mr. Craig served one term in the Lower House of the Kentucky Legislature in the late 1870s.
