Re: 25th Va in the Overland Campaign

Richard Armstrong, in his book, 25th Virginia Infantry and 9th Battalion Virginia History, says that on 5 May 1864, the 25th suffered six men killed, two wounded and taken prisoner, and 86 taken prisoner outright during the first attack on Jones' Brigade. The loss in captured was due to Jones' Brigade flight from Saunders Field. Armstrong based his casualty total on a review of the Compiled Service Records. He refutes General Early's report that nearly all the 25th was taken prisoner that day.

John Michael Priest, in his book, Nowhere to Run: The Wilderness, May 4th and 5th, 1864, cites actions later on 5 May not addressed by Armstrong. Priest notes that a detachment of about 50 men, with Col. Higginbotham, from the 25th Va joined Hays' Louisiana Brigade, fighting on the left of the 6th La, in an attack on and after 4 p.m. While the attack pushed Union forces located north of Saunders Field back a way, the final result was the loss of some 250 men of Hays' Brigade and most of the 50 men of the 25th.
